Feminism in Bapsi Sidhwa’s Ice Candy Man

Feminism in Bapsi Sidhwa’s Ice Candy Man

Regarding feminism; accurately this indictment that the ‘will of men’ had brought on the Women that places this novel apart from the other Women stories. Ice Candy Man is exclusive in illustrating not only the assault that was revealed on the women of the subcontinent but also in its valorization of the indictment and bravery that women are able in periods of disaster. Colors of contemporary feminism as well as would be found in Sidhwa’s work.

Feminism & Women’s Power

Sidhwa’s interpretation of Lenny’s own ideas, of Ayah’s overall rejection to take her destiny, of Godmother’s ingenuity, and of Lenny’s mother and aunt’s initiatives at recovery – all join to offer organization to women in this novel in the perspective of feminism. Sidhwa’s Women-centered story thus vindicates the power of women to create options and to take the reins of their life in their own arms, which actually volumes to an act of fantastic defiance, especially if we keep in thoughts the particular conditions of Ayah’s situation. Thus, though being a novel which seemingly prioritizes a man at least in its name, Ice-Candy-Man slightly but successfully subvert discussion of patriarchy and rights women will, option and durability along with the feministic features of sympathy and becoming a mother.

Feminism & Diasphoric Femininity (ies) in Sidhwa’s Writings

On the other hand through An American Brat, Sidhwa can appropriately be known as a diasporic femininity’s author, as the protect of the novel explains that she “divides her time between the U.S where she instructed, and Lahore where she lived a part of life.” Problematizing the idea of a set identity (ies), Sidhwa symbolizes her woman character as having several stages of identity (ies). Searching the groups of marginalization in Pakistan as well as in U.S, she lives upon the techniques of the sexed subaltern for training organization. When checked out in this way, Sidhwa’s work is different as it explains the various kinds and stages of marginalization. Furthermore, the limitations between the oppressed and the oppressor are brought up into a talk. Situated in various public and regional roles, the females of color develop methods of preparing organization. While doing so, the factors of “normalcy” and “traditionally feminine” are re-conceptualized. It is this state policies of gendering, its significance and effects that are shown in the perspective of contemporary as well as classical feminism.

My Empty Hands

Every morning, I want to take tea that served by my mother. My day starts from the sip of tea. I take tea on my bed, move window’s carton during watch a beautiful garden. Here I see sunrise here. She has been my favorite’s personality from my childhood. She is a wonderful cook. Sometimes I think that my life would not be the same without her. She is treated as a most important member of our family. She talkative and sometimes shows rude behave to others. She finds enjoyment in her work. She sometimes smiles and shows his feelings. She obeyed her own father’s order than my father. My Grandfather’s name is “Halter”. Actually, my mother left me to Mr. Halter’s home for better studies. Because there is calm atmosphere for studies and he lived here lonely.

In Mr. Halter’s home, there is a separate room for study, which was reserved for me. Those days of my studies were full of joy and excitement. Every person gave me respect because of Mr. Halter’s pleasure. Sometimes I take lunch from my uncle’s home and take dinner from outside. Here I was happy so much. My mother was also happy to leave me there. She wanted to make my future prosperous. I recall to my mind all memories of my past.

However, today my mood is very well. Today I am going to meet my friend “Jim”. To meet him I became excited when I came to know that he is going to Australia for studies. Actually, it was his dream that comes into reality. He was so glad to go there.

I was shocked when I came back to my home, here my father shouting on my mother loudly. I ask about the reason from my father then my father says to me “Your dear mom going to marry with your cousin”

I became so angry because she wants to please her father not me. My father asks me about my opinion; I reject this proposal of my cousin. Therefore, my father also gives that answer to my mom. To hear that answer from my side, my mother begins crying. My father requests her that she should tell this opinion to her father ‘Halter’. When my mother conveys this message of rejection of marry to Mr. Halter. In the reaction, he expresses his rude comments to my mother. When my mother comes to home back, she begins crying. She tell us that her father asked him,

If you will not get marry your son according to my opinion, I’ll leave you and will not forgive you forever ever”

To listen that, I go out from my home. Moreover, go to a garden in front of my home. I begin crying a lot here because I love to another girl from my childhood. I think of my mother’s injustice instead of knowing that I love to Riana. I think of my love every times. I cannot live without Riana and I cannot bear any other girl as my wife.

Therefore, I go to my home after 3 hours, but my parents are shouting still.

The next day, my mother became so ill and we take her to doctor. Actually, my mother also wants to make me happy but she also wants her father’s happiness as compare to her own son. When doctor examine her then warns us

‘‘no need to worry about her now, all the worries keep away from her but if it would be again…then she must be die, so make her happy ever till he is alive”

When my mother came to home after recovery, I ask my mom that I am ready to marry my cousin happily.

To listens this good news, my mother recovers soon and gives this good news to Mr. Halter.

After some days, I get marry to “Samaras”. After my marriage my mother and my wife are happy but my cute sister, my brother, my father are not happy with my marriage. After my marriage, I realize a lot that Riana is my first love of my life. Actually, my wife Samaras is not much attractive as Riana is.       My wife do not know how cooking. Often I look a sight of Riana then some tears fall from my eyes. Moreover, I think about my mother’s injustice towards me.

My father was angry with my mother a lot because he was not agreeing with my marriage. My father leaves our home one day. One morning, we see that no one in his room find him everywhere but I cannot find him.

I loved my father then my mother. My father loves me a lot therefore last night he called me from my room and asked me to walk with him to a garden. So I went with him, there he said to me;

“I know that your mother forced you to marry with Samara. And you get marry with her Instead of love with Riana…..I can’t see your pain that you are facing now”

Now these words are announced in my ears, when he told me these words then he was crying continually.

However, I have not any idea that he would leave our home. I saw my father that winter night last time. It has a deep affect on my mother’s health that my mother dies because of repenting that she has done with my life and my father’s disobedience.

My mother was died but she got my marriage with my cousin. Therefore, I am suffering up until now

My mother was died but she gave me painful life

After my mom’s death, my wife takes her mother to our home to live forever. Both my wife Samara and her mother are live in my home. Both are honors of my home and I am nothing for them.

Now I just go to my office and then my home that is like a hell for me….

Now I am just passing days of my life…..with pain and tears!
